How To Maximize Your Veggie Box

Have you ever reached into your fridge and pulled out a wilty, lifeless or even moldy vegetable? Throwing away food is never fun. As farmers, we work extremely hard to ensure that you’re getting the best tasting, freshest veggies possible. However, not knowing how to properly store and manage your veggie box will lead to food waste and a loss of your hard earned dollars.

How can you avoid this tragic event? Here are some tips and tricks to ensure that you get the most out of your weekly veggie box.


Greens First
Greens such as lettuce, spinach, arugula, kale and Asian greens are the most delicate vegetables in your box. They will be the first to wilt so it’s important to eat these first and to properly store them in the fridge.

How to properly store greens
The very first thing you should do once you open your veggie box is take out the greens, put them in a reusable plastic bag or food container and store them in the crisper in your fridge. If they are left in the fridge without a bag or container they wilt right away.

Greens are at their peak freshness for only a few days. If you want crisp vibrant greens be sure to eat them all during the beginning of the week.

What if my greens go wilty? The trick is to place the greens into ice cold water. Within 30 minutes the greens will absorb the water and it’ll perk back up. Then spin dry them and eat them that day.

Make a Meal Plan
Once you find out what’s going to be included in your veggie box, coming up with a meal plan for the week is a smart way to avoid food waste. Just remember to make meals that are heavy on the greens during the beginning of the week, such as salads and stir frys, as they will be the first the wilt.

Make sure you have enough storage containers
Your veggies will last significantly longer if they are kept in a plastic bag or food container. Buying a few extra food containers will end up paying for itself in the long run.

  • Greens such as lettuce, arugula, kale and Asian greens.

  • Herbs

What about basil?
Basil is very sensitive to cold temperatures and is the only green that should not be kept in the fridge. Instead, place basil in a plastic bag or food container and keep it on the counter at room temperature.

What can be store in the fridge without a plastic bag or container?
Tomatoes (if the tomato is a little under ripe or you're planning on eating it right away, they can be left on the counter).

What can be stored in the cupboard or basement?
Winter squash
Potatoes
Storage onions
