Special Easter delivery on Saturday April 8th this week. No delivery on Sunday
We’ll be changing our delivery schedule this week from Sunday to Saturday April 8th for Easter long weekend. There will be no delivery on Sunday this week.
The Tarps Are Off!
We uncovered our new garden space this week. In the fall we had a community member use a moldboard plow to kill the grass. Then we covered the whole field in silage tarps to prevent the grass from re growing. Now we have to till the field to incorporate our amendments and create an even surface so that we can create the beds.
Tilling soil with a tractor is something we don’t typically do on our farm. Regularly tilling the soil damages microorganisms by exposing them to oxygen and sunlight which kills them. Those microorganism play a vital roll in building healthy soil and growing healthy plants. Soil will also develop a structure over time as worms, beetles and other insects travel through it. Those tunnels and pockets that they create help aerate the soil and capture and hold water better. Tilling the soil every year will ruins these structures.
The reason we chose to till to break ground is because we don’t have the time to do it any other way. There are no-till methods for breaking ground but they take a year or more to do. Our soil is also too acidic to grow most vegetables well. We have to incorporate lime in order to bring up the PH levels. And to do that we have to till in the lime and other amendments to ensure our soil is suitable for growing plants. After this initial tillage this soil won’t see a tractor again.
We can’t wait to get our hands in the soil and transform this field into a farm!

Bake-At-Home Strawberry & Raspberry Pie With Crumble Topping
Description: For this pie we started with a sweet and buttery shortbread cookie crust made with our freshly milled Red Fife flour. The Red Fife flour adds a nice nutty flavour.
At peak ripeness we plucked raspberries from our raspberry bushes, picked strawberries from our strawberry patch and then immediately preserved them by freezing them. For the filling we used only our frozen berries, organic sugar and organic tapioca powder to thicken it. To finish it off we added a layer of crumble topping made with Soft White flour, butter, sugar and salt. The combination of strawberry and raspberry is something you rarely see, but once you taste it you'll recognize it as an instant classic that your family will be boasting about!
